Hulu Skewers - Rockville, MD

Hulu Skewers is a Chinese BBQ restaurant that opened on NYE 2022. When we arrived, they asked if we had a reservation. Luckily, they had room for us. At each table, there was a QR code to view the menu and place our order. I wished that the menu indicates spicy levels. For drinks, my boyfriend enjoyed a Heineken while I enjoyed a Hulu Special Fruit, which was basically a Passionfruit Green Tea. It would have been nice if it came with rainbow jelly.

The staff especially Johnny, Luna, and Casper were friendly. They were careful about my peanut allergy. If you are allergic to peanuts, the dry rub seasoning and cucumber salad isn't for you. They gave me some teriyaki sauces to dip my grilled meats in. We were surprised that white rice wasn't included with the meal.

For skewers, we tried a variety. It took about 6-7 mins to cook most meats. I'll admit that the portion size of the meats were tiny for the price you paid ($3/skewer). Each skewer had four pieces of meat, each the size of a fingernail. Our favorites were Angus Beef, Boneless Lamb Spare Ribs, Lamb (Lamb Leg), and Hulu Special Beef. They were flavorful and juicy. All of the chicken skewers (including Hulu Special Chicken and Chicken Knee) were marinated in a chili paste. We disliked the Chicken Knee consisted of crunchy cartilage and wouldn't order again. There was a Bain-Marie to put used metal skewers in.

In addition to the skewers, we enjoyed the Handpull Noodles, which consisted of thin noodles in a flavorful clear broth topped with sliced beef, cilantro, and radish. It reminded us of a Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup. If I had known that the Tinfoil Special: Baby Cabbage with Enoki Mushroom was spicy and couldn't be altered, I wouldn't have ordered it.
